Miller and Coors Merge

Miller and Coors announce merger.

Beer and monopoly go together like peanut butter and jelly, right? Well, that's how the beer market is headed. With Anheuser-Busch holding just under half of the U.S. beer market, no other company seems to have a chance of competing with them. However, companies two and three, Miller and Coors, are teaming up to take those frogs down. According to the Associated Press, the two companies announced their merger Tuesday and will try to give the Bud crew a run for their money. Miller Brewing Co., which is owned by SABMiller PLC, holds about 18 percent of the market and Molson Coors Brewing Co. has about 11 percent. For those not so inspired by math, that is about 29 percent of the market that the new company MillerCoors would seem to have. If the fact that two companies will hold about 80 percent of the market seems wrong, it may just be. They have to pass an antitrust review by either the Federal Trade Commission or the Department of Justice before the deal is done.
