Mississippi Judge Sentenced to Federal Prison for Bribery Charges

Bobby DeLaughter has been the subject of books and a movie

Bobby DeLaughter was sentenced to federal prison in a bribery investigation, according to The Associated Press.

The Mississippi judge and prosecutor was sentenced to 18 months after pleading guilty to lying to the FBI about conversations he maintained with his former boss Hinds County District Attorney Ed Peters, who was accused of having received $1 million to influence DeLaughter in the case.

Peters cooperated and was not charged in the case.

DeLaughter pleaded guilty as part of a plea deal in which he would not be charged with conspiracy and mail fraud.

DeLaughter’s career height was during 1994 when he helped convict a civil rights assassin for the 30-year-old murder of Medgar Evers, the NAACP leader.

DeLaughter was appointed to the bench in 2002 and later on elected to the position.

His legal works became the inspiration for books, and a movie.
The former prosecutor was expected to turn himself to the federal prison in McCreary by 2 p.m. on Monday.
