MLB Attendance Down 6.7 Percent
The Canadian Press reports attendance at Major League Baseball games dropped 6.7 percent in 2009, attributing the drop in attendance to the global recession. Part of the drop is also attributed to two new smaller stadiums in New York for both the Mets and Yankees.
MLB.com has a different take on the matter. They are reporting attendance at MLB games this year was the fifth highest in MLB history. The 30 baseball teams combined to draw a total of 73,418,479 fans.
CBC.ca states that the Toronto Blue Jays had the lowest attendance since 2003, drawing 1.9 million fans. The MLB champion Philadelphia Phillies and the Boston Red Sox both set new records for fan attendance. The Phillies drew 3.6 million fans and the Red Sox drew 3.06 million fans.
