'Mortal Kombat' Film Reboot?

Test Your Might!

Horror news site Bloody Disgusting is reporting that Warner Bros. may be looking to return to the video-game-to-film franchise that started in 1995 with a new beginning.

The first film was made at the height of the game series' popularity and also saw the beginning of director Paul W.S. Anderson's career of giving good video games bad names in theaters, as with the Resident Evil franchise. The sequel, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, was released to dismal reviews two years later, with half of the cast replaced. Since then, a third film in the franchise has been lurking in the background, perpetually stuck in pre-production and casting rumors.

As the popularity of the games waned, so did the chances of a third film being released. Midway, the game's publisher, tanked, and its assets were sold off, with Warner Bros., the producers of the films, buying the rights to the entire franchise. The last official game released, appropriately but blandly titled Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, saw the main storyline come to an official end before a crossover game with DC Comics was released to lukewarm reception.

Somehow, Warners is interpreting all of this as a sign that now is the time to reboot the films, with Oren Uziel in talks to write the first script. Uziel currently does not have anything other than news of this reboot posted on his IMDB entry, so... let's just say that anything is possible. You can rest assured that Superman won't be making an appearance. He's having his own film troubles these days!
