Mother of Eight Asks Oprah for Support

A single mother in California gave birth to octuplets last week and is trying to get $2 million from interviews and commercial sponsorship.

Nadya Suleman was already the mother of six and gave birth to eight last week, a pregnancy resulting from in vitro fertilization (IVF). She is now looking to Oprah and Diane Sawyer to help her find sponsorship to support her young family of fourteen, as reported by the Times.

The problem Suleman may face getting such aid stems from an ethical controversy. The fertility specialist who gave her the IVF should not have implanted eight embryos in the first place, and Suleman disregarded the guidelines prohibiting carrying all eight embryos to term because of the danger to both her and the babies. Both parties could be found at fault.

The babies were born premature and underweight as reported by the Times.

The father of the octuplets is unknown, but it is speculated that they came from frozen sperm of a friend she met while working at a fertility clinic. Suleman is unemployed, living off government grants and parental money. She claims to be a "professional student."

For now, Suleman's parents are living with her after declaring bankruptcy. Many question how she was planning to care for these children when the family budget was already strained with just six. The general public's reaction to this occurrence is mixed, as reported by the Times.
