Move Over Star Wars, There's a New Number Two!
According to E! Online, The Dark Knight beat out the original Star Wars to become the second all-time money-making Hollywood blockbuster.
Even though the movie is not number one this weekend, it brought in $6.8 million yesterday alone, bringing The Dark Knight's total domestically to $471.5 million.
Unfortunately, the immensely popular Star Wars brought in $461 million in its day including releases.
Warner Bros. Distribution chief Dan Fellman was excited about The Dark Knight's earnings saying, "Going in I would have been happy with $250 million."
"I credit Christopher Nolan who is a master filmmaker. He had a vision to take a franchise that had barely grossed $100 million, created Batman Begins, and we were thrilled at a $205 million box office," Fellman says.
Fellman thinks that the movie could hit the $500 million mark Labor Day weekend, but as far as the number one spot, realistically says, "It's not going to happen. Titanic is king of the box office, and will remain that way forever."
Titanic is the only other film to hit the $500 million mark domestically, scoring a record of $601 million.
While The Dark Knight is setting records, it is predicted to settle out at a whopping $530 million; that's only $70 million lower than its rival.
