'Mr. and Mrs. Smith' Prequel/Reboot Incoming

Sans tabloids' favorite amalgamation, Brangelina.

IGN Movies is reporting that New York Magazine's Vulture spies a Mr. and Mrs. Smith follow up coming out in the near future. Though the first film, which essentially created the "Brangelina" phenomenon thanks to the rift it caused between star Brad Pitt and his then-wife Jennifer Aniston after he had an affair with his co-star, Angelina Jolie, was only released five years ago, the rumors are that the new film will be both a prequel and a reboot!

Currently being called Mr. and Mrs. Jones, the new film will be an origin story about yet another couple. In case you aren't familiar, the first film told the story of a couple who are assigned by their respective agencies to kill one another. When each discovers that the other is a secret agent, they go AWOL and fight the forces that would keep them apart. The first film started right in the middle of their careers, but the new one would presumably cover the beginning of a similar relationship.

The first film was a big hit with audiences, and rumors of a TV series based on it had also been tossed around, but it now appears that Fox and Regency Enterprises are hoping that the Jones' can keep up with the Smiths. Which gets me thinking, why not start with a real celeb couple like Will and Jada Pinkett Smith so as to avoid any more disastrous marriage dissolutions? Those two would be perfect, and Will has already worked with Jones' producer, Akiva Goldsman, on I Am Legend and Hancock! It practically films itself, people!
