Munich Brewers Join Forces to Create Special Beer for 200th Anniversary of Oktoberfest

In an unprecedented collaboration, the six main breweries of Munich, Germany have teamed up

During the annual celebration known as Oktoberfest, six main breweries in Munich, Germany have traditionally gone head-to-head as part of an ongoing rivalry. However, with the 200th anniversary of the festival just around the corner, the six main breweries of Munich have joined forces in an unprecedented collaboration to create a special beer in honor of the occasion.

The city’s master brewers are looking to pay homage to Bavarian culture with Jubiläumswiesnbier which translates to Oktoberfest Jubilee Beer, ABCNews.com reports. A vintage tent has been erected to generate nostalgia, represent the history of Oktoberfest, and serve as the exclusive serving location for Jubiläumswiesnbier at the 2010 festival.

Top brewery technician at InBev’s Spaten-Löwenbrau subsidiary, Jörg Lehmann, told ABC, “Our anniversary beer is similar in color and alcohol content to what was drunk 200 years ago. But in terms of taste we have made quite a few improvements.”

A joint statement issued by the six breweries that joined forces to create Jubiläumswiesnbier – Augstiner, Hacker-Pschorr, Hofbräu, Löwenbrau, Paulaner, and Spatenbrau – reads, “The amber-colored special beer is full-bodied in taste with a flowery malt aroma.”

“The brewing masters have ceremoniously pledged to keep the recipe secret and only use it this year.”
