Museums over Machines Ð "Smithsonian" Beats "Terminator"

Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian takes the number one spot at the box office, leaving "Terminator Salvation" behind.

In a surprising box office upset, Fox's Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian has given a sound beating to Terminator Salvation.

The Night at the Museum sequel has made an astounding $70 million during its opening weekend, beginning Friday, an amount greatly surpassing the one expected by its distributors, 20th Century Fox. The first Night at the Museum made only $30 million during opening weekend.

However, the same long Memorial Day weekend hasn't proven as lucrative to Warner Bros. as they would have liked. Terminator Salvation, the fourth Terminator movie, and the only one not featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger, has earned a relatively unsatisfactory $53.8 million.

Smithsonian stars Hollywood funnyman Ben Stiller, who goes back to playing his role as a night watchman for a museum where the exhibits come alive. This is Stiller's personal best movie record during opening weekend, after Meet the Fockers in 2004.

Terminator Salvation stars Christian Bale as John Connor, and Bryce Dallas Howard as Kate Connor. It is the first Terminator movie to be made in six years.
