Nancy Starts a Trend

With "Nancy Drew" and "Hairspray" a new type of character emerges in the teen movie genre.

With stars like Britney, Lindsay and Paris on a downward spiral, role models for tweens and teens are getting redefined. The edgy girl is out and the fresh-faced and put together teen character emerges. Over the past ten years there have been many teen plotlines that have to do with good girl-versus-mean girl. The genre that has become a teen classic is old and a new type of movie, that features girls being who they are and being able to think for themselves, is on the rise. Movies like "Nancy Drew," starring Emma Roberts, follows a smart girl who knows who she is and embraces it. Other movies following in the trend is "Hairspray," out July 20th, that sports a very positive message, similar to that of Nancy Drew. It is about time that the teenage girl gets a role model, that is actually a role model. In an industry that continues to become more concerned with "selling" than the quality of the actual product, these movies are a shining star. If this trend continues the teen industry will be reinvented for the better.
