NBC Inks Deal to Broadcast U.S. Gymnastics' Biggest Events
USA Gymnastics is looking to make a comeback on national television. The league, which describes itself as "the sole national governing body for the sport of gymnastics in the United States," has signed a deal with NBC and cable partner Universal Sports to air gymnastics' biggest events from now through 2012.
Combined with their swimming, skating, track, and skiing contracts, NBC now controls a great deal of Olympic sports coverage. The fact that NBC now has broadcast rights with five major Olympic sports could interfere with the U.S. Olympic Committee's aspirations to create their own channel. Summer Olympics have been aired on NBC since 1988, and Winter Olympics since 2002.
Comcast, who is partnered with the U.S. Olympic Committee to form a new Olympic network after next year's Vancouver Games, was chosen after network negotiations failed with NBC and Universal.
