The Office fans have increasingly been seeing more and more of Dwight Schrute’s family beet farm this season, the first full season without Steve Carell. Now it looks like viewers might get an entire show based on Dwight’s life on the farm. NBC is reportedly planning a spin-off centered on the quirky character played by Rainn Wilson.

An unnamed source confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter Wednesday that rumors that NBC had been planning this are true, claiming that the idea will get a full try-out during the last few episodes of this season.

The story was also confirmed by Deadline, which reported that the show is being considered for the 2013 midseason and that Wilson, who has played the character since 2005, will work with The Office’s executive producer and showrunner Paul Lieberstein to develop the series. A source close to the show said that Wilson and Lieberstein had been joking about making a series dedicated to the Shrute Farms Bed and Breakfast and how badly Dwight would run it. NBC agreed that it would make for a great show and have now begun developing it.

Most of the executive producers who work on The Office will work on the Dwight series, except for Greg Daniels, who developed The Office. He is already busy working on that show, Parks and Recreation and a new series for NBC called Friday Night Dinner.

The Office still hasn’t been picked up for a ninth season, but if it is, Dwight will still be a part of it. According to Deadline, NBC plans to have Dwight leave the show midseason. Still, a ninth season is going to be difficult, with Ed Helms hoping to star in a third Hangover film and John Krasinski working on a project with Matt Damon.

As MTV News notes, just because Dwight might have a cult following, does not mean that a show centered exclusively on him will be a success. If could fail like the Joey spin-off of Friends or it could be a surprise success like Frasier.
