An NC-17 Rating for "Bruno"
Funny man Sacha Baron Cohen's latest movie might just be pushing the limit. "Bruno," in which Baron Cohen plays a gay Australian 'fashionista,' has been given a rating of NC-17, which is making studio execs at Universal cringe.
According to thewrap.com, the film features several racy scenes, one which involves the actor seemingly engaging in a sexual act with another man. In addition, the film features several scenes that might be considered too risque, crossing the barriers of what is racially acceptable.
"On its first submission the film did not receive an R but it is far too early to say that there is any struggle to get there as the process is only at its inception," a spokesman for Universal said.
The problem with an NC-17 film is that, unlike a film that's rated R, it's tough to market. Universal will spend $42 million to purchase the rights to "Bruno," and much more than that to market the film.
Bruno was screened at the South by Southwest Film Festival, and Baron Cohen is optimistic that the film will eventually receive an R rating and the green light to appear in theaters
