The New Acropolis Museum Opens in Greece

Majestic museum hopes to increase tourism in Greece

Greece's new Acropolis Museum will open to the public on Sunday.

It is located in central Athens, and has three main levels within 250,000 square feet. According to The Associated Press, it will feature 4,000 exhibits.

The building is made of glass and concrete, and contains structures from Athens's golden age. According to BBC News, the museum hopes to obtain sculptures from the British Museum that originally decorated the Parthenon temple right across from the Acropolis.

The new museum cost $200 million to build and was designed by the architect Bernard Tschumi. It replaces the old Acropolis Museum and has a direct view of the Parthenon, The New York Times reports.

The museum was many years in the works and utilizes the Elgin Marbles at its center. These are classic Greek sculptures dating from fifth century B.C.

The museum is a response to the British, who took home many Greek statues 200 years ago, claiming that Greece did not have a suitable museum for artifacts.
