New Cirque to Open in Macau
The newest Cirque show was shown in a sneak peak on Thursday to the Las Vegas Sands Corp., reported Reuters. The $150 million dollar show, to soon open at the Venetian Macau, is the latest bet to get visitors to the Asian city for more than just gambling.
"Zaia" is to have dancers and acrobats playing out the story of a girl who goes to outer space in Asia's first permanent Cirque du Soleil installation. The contract for this show is to last for 10 years.
The hope is that "Zaia" will bring in the same sort of crowds that the U.S. casino group is used to pulling in. The main reason for the first-quarter loss to the company was the loss of the VIP market of high-rollers who bring in up to $100,000 a visit, reported Reuters.
Unlike Las Vegas, Macau, a former Portuguese enclave, has a reputation for bringing in gamblers with little more than just that on their minds. Sands hopes to change that. There is also a plan to bring in another Cirque show, in the Sheraton that is under construction across the street, next year, said Reuters.
