New Inductions into Rock N Roll Hall of Fame
It was certainly an interesting affair Monday night at the annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. After years of being nominated and then outvoted, Iggy Pop and the Stooges have finally been added.
Iggy Pop and the Stooges weren’t the only ones broadening the Hall of Fame. ABBA, the Hollies, Genesis, and Jimmy Cliff were also inducted.
Iggy said backstage that the induction of himself and the Stooges, guitarists Ron Asheton and James Williamson and drummer Scott Asheton, “lets certain people, people who are nervous with losers, this lets them know it's cool to like us. I didn't think they'd ever have us in that club."
When asked about any memorabilia that he donated, Iggy replied “I told them where to buy all the stuff I sold for drugs in the 70s.”
While on stage shirtless and playing Search and Destroy and I Wanna Be Your Dog, Iggy invited/dared people to join him on stage. Dozens of well-dressed guests did so.
This year the Hall of Fame added new styles to its list. Music that was long considered not serious enough (ABBA), music that was too serious (Genesis), music that exemplifies melodic flawlessness (The Hollies), music that emerged outside of the U.S. or U.K. (reggae singer Cliff), and last but not least a group that took standard notions of music and threw it out the window (the Stooges). Who knows what next year will bring.
