The New 'It'Couple: Bono and Brad
Looks like Bono has recruited another Hollywooder for global activeness. Brad Pitt launched the One Campaign with Bono on April 7 to increase awareness and fight crises like AIDS, hunger and poverty worldwide.
Pitt joined the campaign because of a recent trip to Africa where he met poverty-stricken people dying of AIDS and other illnesses. "I've seen it. To turn my back on it would make me culpable."
Bono stressed that "it's not a cause; it's an emergency" as thousands of people in Africa die everyday from preventable causes.
Rather than taking donations, Bono, Pitt and the One Campaign ask that people visit One.org and sign a petition to direct more resources to impoverished countries. The ultimate goal is to convince the US government to use 1 percent of its income, or $25 billion, to help those countries.
After supporters register their names and e-mail addresses, they may be asked to write to their senators and representatives and voice their opinions on the importance of sending food and medicine to third world countries.
"Everybody wants to change the world," said Bono. "Not just rock stars."
