New Moon Breaks Records
The latest installment of "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" earned $72.7 million across the United States and Canada on Friday, which included the films record-breaking midnight sales of $26.3 million.
The previous record was held by last summer's blockbuster "The Dark Knight," which was $62.2 million. "The Dark Knight" is now the second-biggest grossing movie ever in North America.
"New Moon" may not be able to be the second-largest grossing movie in North America, but industry observers expect it to close out the weekend with upwards of $125 million.
If the observers assumptions are correct, "New Moon" would be number four, behind "The Dark Knight," "Spider-Man 3," and "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest."
As for midnight release records, before "New Moon," the record was held by "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," which made $22.2 million when it opened in July.
"The Twilight Saga" is based off of four novels written by Stephenie Meyer. The third installment, "Eclipse" is due out in June.
