New Year Resolutions

Growing up, and letting go

And so another year comes to pass as a new one begins. The only thing that stays the same is change. How uninteresting life would be without change in our lives. As we watch our glorious infants turn into "moving a mile a minute" toddlers, and through the school age years and on into high school and college, life moves at a rapid pace. I used to cringe when people would say to me, "children grow up so fast." I'd cringe because while you're raising children, it doesn't seem so fast. But as a mother of grown children, to me, they will always be my kids.

As I reflect on that statement - "...they will always be my kids..." in fact I ask myself -- were they ever? From the moment children are born, they're different from one another and each unique in their own amazing ways. Children in fact are not a possession, but a gift. A gift to their parents, their family, the community, and the universe.

And just as children grow and change, people and circumstances change on a daily basis. We never know what the new year has in store for us, but we can look to the future and all that life has to offer. Someone asked me recently if I'd made my New Year Resolutions. "No," I said, "I don't make once-a-year resolutions, but ongoing ones, ever day. Well maybe not every day, but at least once a year!
