Newest Martin Scorsese Film Delayed in Release

The release date for Martin Scorsese's latest film, "Shutter Island," starring Leonardo DiCaprio, has been pushed back to February 2010.

The release date for the newest Martin Scorsese film has moved back, a sign in Hollywood that usually screams trouble. "Shutter Island," starring Leonardo DiCaprio, has been moved from Oct. 2 to Feb 19 due to, according to Variety, "economic factors."

Brad Grey, CEO of Paramount Pictures, the distributer for the film, said in a press statement that, "Like every business, we must make difficult choices to maximize our overall success." The move puts "Shutter Island" in competition with Lionsgate's "From Paris With Love" and Screen Gems' "Takers."

Yet the newest Scorsese-DiCaprio partnership has movie experts predicting it as a possible Oscar contender, especially since it is based on a novel by Dennis Lehane, who wrote "Mystic River," previously adapted into an Oscar-winning movie starring Sean Penn.

"Shutter Island" is set in 1954, with DiCaprio portraying a U.S. Marshal investigating the disappearance of an escaped murderess. The film is marketed as a thriller, a genre not normally given attention by the Academy, but given that the film is a Scorsese-directed project, they could make an exception.
