Nickelodeon to Go Under Water

Nickelodeon is planning to create a themed water park in New Orleans. Watch out for the over-sized SpongeBob.

Nickelodeon is taking a page from Disney and Harry Potter when it comes to money-making schemes.

The network has teamed up with the city of New Orleans and Southern Star Entertainment to create a water park called Nickelodeon Universe New Orleans.

This will be Nickelodean's first outdoor theme park. Southern Star Entertainment will construct the park, which will contain Nickelodeon brand and characters from its TV programs. The characters will include "SpongeBob SquarePants," "Dora the Explorer," "Go, Diego, Go!" and "Avatar: The Last Airbender."

The theme park will be 65-acres and will be located in eastern New Orleans, at the site of an old Six Flags theme park which was shut down after going underwater during Hurricane Katrina. The new Nickelodeon Universe will also feature traditional amusement park rides such as roller-coasters, as well as water rides. There will also be costumed characters, live entertainment, retail shops, and food establishments.

The construction is set to begin in the fall and the opening date is tentatively set at the end of 2010.
