Nine More Episodes of "Vampire Diaries," Five More "Melrose"
The CW has signed on to give "The Vampire Diaries" nine more episodes while only five more episodes were ordered for "Melrose Place," the Los Angeles Times reports.
"The Vampire Diaries" is now promised a traditional full season. If no more episodes are granted to "Melrose Place," it will be shorter than most other shows. The explanation for this discrepancy is found in the ratings.
Kevin Williamson's "Diaries" has been a smash hit with viewers. The dark and thrilling series usually attracts a million more viewers than any other show airing on CW this season. An astounding 3.8 million fans tuned in for the most recent episode.
In contrast, "Melrose Place" has produced ratings that make it somewhat shocking that even five more episodes were granted. Tuesday night, viewership was 1.5 million, a number that indicates only slightly more interest than audiences showed for the recently canceled "The Beautiful Life."
However, Heather Locklear will return to the show next month for multiple episodes and her appearances could presumably boost ratings.
