No Fur for Michelle Obama
A day after France's first lady, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, told PETA she doesn't wear real fur, first lady Michelle Obama released a statement saying she "does not wear fur," Us Weekly reported.
PETA pushed Bruni-Sarkozy to stop wearing fur and donate it to the homeless. In a letter responding to the organization, she said she doesn't "wear, buy, or own fur or animal skin other than leather or skin of animals raised for feeding purposes."
She went on to say she doesn't "find it illogical to wear skins of animals whose meat is also eaten."
Obama was not on PETA's target list. Amanda Schinke, media campaign coordinator for PETA, said she is known to be "fur-free."
"For Michelle Obama, respecting animals is obviously part of the social progress that she and her husband are working so hard to promote," PETA Senior Vice President Dan Mathews said. "By officially rejecting fur, these two style icons (Carla Bruni-Sarkozy and Michelle Obama) will make people everywhere see fur for what it is: old-fashioned and cruel."
