Nolan Reveals Details on 'Superman' and 'Batman 3'
The LA Times' Geoff Boucher met up with Christopher Nolan, director of the upcoming Inception, to ask him a few questions about his role as both Superman's "godfather" and his involvement in a new Batman, and managed to convince the evasive director to offer a few interesting bits of information!
Nolan revealed that it was frequent collaborator David S. Goyer who suggested he could create a version of Superman that Nolan could work with:
"I immediately got it, loved it and thought: That is a way of approaching the story I’ve never seen before that makes it incredibly exciting," Nolan said, revealing that he brought the idea to the studio and brought aboard his producer wife, Emma Thomas, too.
Regarding Batman, Nolan said that they've got a great story on board, with his brother, Dark Knight and The Prestige scribe Jonathan Nolan writing the script right now.
When asked about whether the film would continue the trend of using realistic villains over superpowered ones, Nolan simply shook his head and said, “It won’t be," before dropping an unexpected name: “Mr. Freeze."
Regarding the possibility of a team-up film, Nolan holds that his version of Batman exists in a universe where he is the only superhero around and that he and Superman will not be teaming up under his watch. "Each serves to the internal logic of the story. They have nothing to do with each other."
However, perhaps Nolan will change his mind once his Superman project is released, and with Mr. Freeze possibly setting up superpowers into the continuity, anything seems possible...
Until then, though, Nolan says he would like to just focus on Inception, which is still being worked on for its July 16 release.
