Nuclear Detonation in North Korea Causes Worry Worldwide
North Korea's continued detonation of nuclear devices has put the world on edge. As the Times Online points out, China has been among the countries most affected. In fact, North Korea's blatant disregard of various warnings and messages has mocked the former Chinese appeal for quiet diplomacy when dealing with the dictatorship. As the Times goes on to explain, this situation traps China in its own policy of non-interference as its domestic safety and interests are threatened. While no foreigners have actually seen evidence of nuclear material in North Korea, the United States has estimated that the country has extracted enough plutonium to build up to eight bombs (Aljazeera). Regardless, information continues to be extremely limited. Although the physical detonation of nuclear devices must receive the most attention, Bloomberg suggests that the impending succession of Kim Jon Il may be at the root of North Korea's actions. Since his rumored stroke in August of last year, many have hypothesized about the identity of his heir. Some believe it to be his youngest son, Kim Jong-un while others expect his 63-year-old son-in-law to usurp the power.
