Obama to Address School Children on Education, Opposition Resounds

President's push for education threatening to some parents.

On Sep. 8, President Obama will deliver a speech live on the White House Web site directed towards the nation's school children.

The president said the address will be "about the importance of staying in school; how we want to improve our education system and why it's important for the country."

In the days before the speech, the innovative format of the address has come under fire from Conservatives such as Jim Greer, chairman of the Republican Party of Florida, because it "does not allow for debate on the president's agenda." Some have even gone so far as to call the address "brainwashing."

The Department of Education has invited all teachers, administrators, and students to view the speech and discuss it in the classroom. However, a number of parents have expressed intent to remove their children from the classroom if the speech is to be viewed out of fear that their children are viewing propaganda.

"Stay in school" seems like an ethically sound message, but it just shows how divisive bipartisan lines are to the closed-minded.
