One Too Many Awards for Coldplay

Coldplay is accused of plagiarism for their Grammy nominated song, "Viva la Vida."

Coldplay will be "awarded" with more than they bargained for this weekend at the Grammys. Guitarist Joe Satriani is suing the Scottish pop/rock band for a copyright infringement of his 2004 instrumental track, "I Just Wanna Fly," as reported by Entertainment News.

Ironically, the very song that is being contended, "Viva la Vida," is also being nominated for Record of the Year. Satriani was planning on serving Coldplay the papers while they were in L.A. for the award show this weekend, but the band's lawyer intervened. Instead of serving the papers directly to the band, Satriani will deliver them to the band's lawyer. This way their momentous weekend will not be compromised.

Despite these allegations, Coldplay's fame has earned them recognition across Canadian borders as well. They are up for International Album of the Year at this year's JUNO Awards, according to the band's Web site. The band won this same award for their X&Y album in 2006.

To cover the band's expansive recognition, 60 Minutes will feature an interview with them to run on Sunday evening (Feb. 8) at 7 p.m. ET/PT on CBS, prior to the Grammy Awards.

The scope of Coldplay's success is reflected both positively and negatively this week. Regardless of global fame and glory, it seems they have stepped on some toes, the results of this issue to play out in weeks to come.
