Ongoing Debate Over Skinny Models

London's Fashion Week opens with renewed debate over skinny models.

London's Fashion Week officials have refused to place bans on models with dangerously low BMIs, a measure recently imposed by fashion show officialss in Madrid and Milan. Stating that such actions are unwanted and impossible to impose, London officials have recommended that only healthy-looking girls be used for the shows.

Fashion designers have expressed concern that the focus on weight is a distraction from their styles, claiming that the clothes are shown to the best advantage on thinner figures. Meanwhile, health experts are concerned that these designers' shows are making unrealistically thin girls into icons, which in turn might negatively affect young girls and women.

Of the three major fashion week cities, only Milan has taken steps to impose restrictions. Neither Paris nor New York has followed suit. Meanwhile, the Eating Disorders Association has insisted that the fashion industry is not the cause of escalating anorexia and bulimia statistics, but is merely "part of the context."
