Oprah Faces Twin Suits
Oprah Winfrey is fighting for the rights for her big give.
Attorneys for the Winfrey are fending off two separate lawsuits, one filed by an audience member at "The Oprah Winfrey Show" who claims she was injured during a taping, and another from a Boston mother who claims that she fed Winfrey's company with the idea for Winfrey's most recent television show, according to E! News.
Winfrey's popular reality television show, "Oprah's Big Give", judges contestants on their ability to help those less fortunate.
In the first lawsuit, Orit Greenberg is seeking more than $50,000 in medical fees and other damages from Winfrey's company Harpo Studios, claiming that while attending a taping of the show on Dec. 5, 2006, she suffered "severe and permanent injuries."
Greenberg said that in a rush for choice seats during the taping, "an excess number of patrons ... rushed the gate" and Greenberg was pushed down a flight of stairs, E! News said. The suit blames Harpo Studio for Greenberg's injuries.
In the other lawsuit, Darlene Tracy alleged that producers of "Oprah's Big Give" stole the idea from a proposal she sent the company back in February 2005.
Tracy claims she pitched a reality show called "The Philanthropist" to Ellen Rakieten and Jennifer Thornton, the executive producer and a producer of Winfrey's daytime talk show.
Tracy claims that the producers ultimately passed on the show -- but then Winfrey announced plans for a similar reality series more than a year later.
A Harpo rep told E! News on Friday that the company does not comment on pending litigation.
