Oprah Sues Over Internet Scams
On Wednesday, TV guru Oprah Winfrey and Dr. Mehmet Oz, a regular guest expert on "The Oprah Winfrey Show," sued more than 50 businesses for misusing the Oprah endorsement to sell products on the Internet. The companies in question attached Oprah's name to various health and anti-aging products including dietary supplements and colon cleansers.
The most egregious of the false endorsements appeared after Dr. Oz touted the health benefits of the acai berry on an episode of "The Oprah Winfrey Show." After the airing of the episode, Oprah disciples fell victim to Internet scams after trying to buy acai berry products that advertised using Oprah's name.
According to TheAmLawDaily, Oprah's party brought suit only after sending numerous cease-and-desist letters to the companies and having them ignored. In the lawsuit, Winfrey and Oz claim that the use of their names, pictures, voices, and trademarks have caused serious damage to their reputations.
