Oscar winning movie hits Broadway

'Rocky' movie to become Broadway musical

In 1976, director John G. Avildson created a movie of passion and triumph: Rocky.

The sports drama film followed Rocky Balboa on a story about a man turning his American dream from rags to riches.

Now, the Oscar winning movie will appear on Broadway!

According to Playbill, the musical will be based on the original Academy Award-winning Rocky movie.

"It was made to be a musical," librettist Thomas Meehan said. It's got all the elements."

"Sylvester Stallone won't be in it, but he's given us his blessing," Meehan said. "He and I sat and worked it out together. It's really, on some level, autobiographical. He was an actor nobody cared about. The whole thing is an analogy of his own life."

Currently, songwriters Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens are collaborating with Meehan on the project.

The creative team is planning to “try the musical out in Germany in the fall of 2012.” The following spring, the team will push to bring it to Broadway.
