Oscars Receive Record 20 Entries for Animated Film Category

The Academy Awards received a record of 20 submissions for the Best Feature Animated Film category.

A record breaking 20 animated films have been submitted for the Academy Awards Ceremony, reported Reuters.

From the 20 Oscars submissions only a maximum of five will be nominated for the Oscar Award.

The submissions include "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel," "Coraline," which amounted $121 million in ticket sales worldwide, "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs," Disney's hit "Up" which earned $507 million worldwide, "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs," "The Princess and the Frog," and independently made "Mary and Max."

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences began officially awarding the animated films in 2001, with the creation of the Best Animated Feature Film award which was received by DreamWorks "Shrek," nominations for the Oscar which have been increasing with the passing years.

The Academy Awards' Oscars nominees for the 2009 year will be announced on February 2nd and the awards will be presented on May 2010.
