Pakistani Police Attack Protesters
Tear Gas and Clubs are what police used in their attack on thousands of protesting lawyers in the city of Lahore today. An estimated 150 lawyers were arrested there after they stood on the roof of the High Court throwing stones at police in response to the imposition of the emergency rule, enacted by Pakistan president Gen. Pervez Musharraf this weekend. They are not the only ones that police and the government are facing opposition from. Protests were held at 2 of the country's top universities, involving students and faculty. Also, hundreds of journalists and printers from Pakistan's largest media group confronted the police and officials from the government's press information department. Pakistan officials said an estimated 500 opposition figures have been arrested since the emergency rue was put into effect. The United States, because of displeasure with the rule, suspended its annual defense talks with Pakistan.
