Parents' Paradise?

Channel 293, 24-hour television channel for infants aged from 6 months to 3 years, has sparked all sorts of controversy.

The show is essentially a virtual babysitter. Instead of watching your kids, parents can now flip to Channel 293, where shows like Hide and Seek, in which two animated squirrels take turns hiding an acorn, will entertain children, instead of human contact. The channel even provides a show called Sandman, which was designed to put infants to sleep. BabyFirstTV, another name for the virtual baby sitter, will hit Britain in late 2006. Even though BabyFirstTV is receiving complaints that children under the age of 2 really should not be watching television, BabyFirst argues that parents are going to sit their children in front of the tube so at least there will be quality/engaging programs for the children to watch,

While The American Academy of Paediatrics seems pretty ominous about the effects of young children being exposed to television, most test-drivers approved of the channel. One mother even stated, "The first time he saw it he learnt the shape of a triangle, which was very impressive...He was happy watching by himself. It really helped me. I could get housework done. The first time, we watched it together. The second time, I just put it on. He sat down for an entire hour."
