Patricia Heaton Starring in New ABC Sitcom

The former Debra Barone of "Everybody Loves Raymond" is returning to the small screen.

Patricia Heaton will star in the new ABC sitcom, The Middle, Reuters Canada reports.

The comedy is about a middle-class Midwestern family as seen from the mother's perspective. According to the Hollywood Reporter, it was written by DeAnn Heline and Eileen Heisler, both of whom claim writing credits on Murphy Brown and Lipstick Jungle. Ricki Lake was originally signed on for the lead role during the show's initial 2006-2007 development cycle.

This will mark Heaton's second attempt at a TV comeback following the end of the CBS hit, Everybody Loves Raymond. She picked up two Emmys for her work as Ray Romano's wife, Debra, on the nine-season sitcom.

Her previous attempt, starring opposite Kelsey Grammer in Back to You, proved unsuccessful when the show was cancelled in May after just one season.

The Middle will begin shooting in February of next year.
