Paul Haggis, Director of "Crash," Quits Scientology

After 35 years of Scientology membership, Paul Haggis renounces the church.

Oscar winning director, Paul Haggis, renounced the Church of Scientology after 35 years on Sunday, announced The Hollywood Reporter.

Best known for his films Million Dollar Baby and Crash, Haggis sent a letter to the Tommy Davis (celebrity spokesman for Scientology), explaining his reasons for leaving the church.

Apparently since Scientology is in support of the very controversial Proposition 8 in California, which prohibits same-sex marriage, Haggis has decided to break with the church calling the proposition in his letter a "hate filled legislation." This happened a year after Haggis and his wife were ordered to break contact with his parents-in-law as they allegedly broke some sect rules.

In the process Haggis achieved at making the Scientology church lose a very loyal supporter of their church and gain some bad publicity and image; although with other huge stars, among the best known Tom Cruise and John Travolta, it will be difficult for Haggis' letter of making too big an impact.
