Paul McCartney to Release Dormant Beatles Song

McCartney wants to release "Carnival of Light," an experimental Beatles song from 1967.

Paul McCartney hopes to release an experimental Beatles track recorded over 40 years ago. "Carnival of Light," a 14-minute track laid down in February of 1967 was only played for an audience once, but never actually released to the public. "I like it because it's the Beatles free, going off piste," he told the BBC in a radio interview to be broadcast Thursday.

McCartney said that the track was recorded during a session at Abbey Road studio, where he asked the other members of the Fab Four to "just wander round all of the stuff and bang it, shout, play it. It doesn't need to make any sense." This project represented a long-standing interest in avant-garde music for McCartney, who was most often considered the most "melodically minded" Beatle. "Carnival of Light" was inspired by experimental composers John Cage and Karleintz Stockhausen.

Paul McCartney needs to get permission from Ringo Starr, and the widows of Lennon and Harrison before he can release the song.
