Pearl Jam Tops U.S. Pop Charts
For the first time in 13 years, Seattle natives Pearl Jam top the U.S. pop album charts today. They ended the two week reign of Jay-Z, knocking him to the second spot.
Rock fans rejoice, Pearl Jam tops the charts. The band's ninth studio album 'Backspacer' sold a total of 189,000 copies according to Nielsen SoundScans for the week that ended on the 27. In 2006 Pearl Jam's self-titled release debuted and hit the highest point of #2 with 279,000 copies sold.
The band had ruled the Billboard 200 on three other occasions, most recently in 1996 when "No Code" led the field with 367,000 copies. It first went to the top in 1993 when its second album "Vs" kicked off with 950,000 copies and returned the following year with "Vitalogy" (877,000). Such hefty first-week numbers are unheard of these days as the music industry keeps spiraling downward,' as reported on ABCNews.com.
