Peter Graves Dies at 83

Graves died of a heart attack at 83.

Peter Graves, best known for his role in Airplane!, died of a heart attack at his California home Sunday, Entertainment Weekly reports. He was 83.

Graves starred in the 1967-73 TV series Mission Impossible as spy leader Jim Phelps. He garnered Golden Globe and Emmy nominations for his portrayal but walked away empty handed both times.

It wasn’t until Graves became the voice of A&E’s Biography series that he finally won an Emmy in 1997 for Judy Garland’s episode.

In his early years, Graves landed roles in 1953’s Stalag 17 and 1955’s Night of the Hunter, among others.

Graves was a Minnesota native who joined Hollywood after a stint in the U.S. Air Force. Graves wasn’t the only family member to make it big. His older brother, James Arness, starred in Gunsmoke.
