Pirate in a Sea . . . of Concrete

The Somalian pirate allegedly involved in the hijacking of the Maersk Alabama was arrested and brought to New York City, Monday.

The suspect was brought to the Jacob K. Javits Federal Office Building in Manhattan, according to CNN. There he is to be held at a federal detention facility while waiting for his appearance in federal court.

The suspect was "all smiles" as he was escorted through the rain by New York City law enforcement agencies. Although questioned by the media, it was not clear if he understood or not.

The "Pirate Defendant," as he has been labeled in official documents, was brought to Dijibouti aboard a refueling ship that was with the USS Bainbridge at the scene of the hijacking.

Navigation officer on the Maersk Alabama, Ken Quinn, said that he was not angry with the individual pirate, and understood that they came from a region of hardship and poverty. He also reported that the suspect told him he wanted to go to the United States and asked for Quinn's help getting him there.

"I said, 'Yeay, you'll probably go anyway. I don't think you're going to need my help.' If he goes to jail here, it will be a whole lot better than living in Somalia," said Quinn.
