Pirates Sequel Sells 5 Million DVDs on First Day

Disney could take home top three selling DVDs of the year with strong showing from Dead Man's Chest.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest was just what holiday shoppers were looking for this season, when the Disney movie sold five million copies of its DVD on the first day of its release, according to Reuters.

The strong showing for the sequel could mean Disney could finish the year with the top three selling DVDs.

Dead Man's Chest also is on track to unseat the previous live-action record holder for DVD sales. The previous holder was the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie which sold 16 million copies on DVD and 2 million on VHS, according to Reuters.

DVD sales can make up to half of a movie's total gross - Dead Man's Chest has grossed over $1 billion worldwide in ticket sales.

The top selling DVDs of the year include Cars and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, each with more than 12 million copies sold, according to Reuters.
