Possible Jail Time For Chris Brown?
According to People.com, singer Chris Brown might face jail time as the Los Angeles Police Department finishes up its investigation of his alleged assault on Rihanna.
The victim's injuries will ultimately decide Brown's fate, meaning that he could receive only probation, or something more serious time in jail.
There are still no charges against the singer who was arrested on Feb. 8 for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend Rihanna. He was arrested for making criminal threats, which is a felony, but the final charges will be decided when the case reaches the district attorney.
However, Brown might not face any serious jail time. Experts told People magazine that more often than not, misdemeanor charges are filed in cases such as this. With Brown as a first-time offender, his fate will rest on the physical damage done to his victim.
"After examining police photos, medical records or reviewing victim statements, the injuries usually speak for themselves," says L.A. criminal defense attorney Jeffery Rubenstein. "Either they rise to a felony level or they don't."
The police have yet to release any official evidence from their investigation and have been only referring to the case as "a domestic violence incident ... involving entertainer Chris Brown." Rihanna has yet to be officially identified as the victim.
If the charge is only a misdemeanor, Brown will face up to one year in a county jail but will probably end up with probation and counseling. A felony charge however, would be punishable by over a year in a state prison.
