President Obama Praises Senate Democrats For Advancement Of Health Care
During a speech that was given earlier today at the White House, President Barack Obama praised Democratic Senators for their advancement of the health care reform legislation and labeled their efforts to break through a filibuster that had been in place by opponents in an attempt to block a final vote as a big victory for the American people. Despite the fact that the proposed bill lost several components that he had been vouching for due to revisions that were made to generate the necessary 60 votes for advancement, President Obama expressed his gratitude over the fact that it had taken the next step towards widespread health care reform.
Senate Democrats initially hoped to have the bill voted upon before Christmas and while it appeared late last week as if the goal would not be reached, advancements have been made that will allow a vote to occur on Thursday, December 24th. President Obama alluded to the fact that although the health care legislation was not necessarily perfect, he believes that it will have a positive effect on families, senior citizens, business and the country as a whole.
President Obama also chose to address critics and special interest groups that have been lobbying to oppose health care reform by saying, “This [bill] cuts our deficit by $132 billion the first 10 years and by over $1 trillion in the second. The argument that opponents are making against this bill does not hold water."
