President Obama Signs Memorandum To Address Childhood Obesity

The growing epidemic of childhood obesity has influenced President Barack Obama and his administration to take action against it

Earlier this morning, President Barack Obama signed a childhood obesity memorandum in front of his wife, First Lady Michelle Obama, and various members of the Cabinet. According to CNN.com, the memorandum has been signed in order to implement a federal task force, which will have the assignment of developing an elaborate 90 day plan to encourage optimal coordination between non-private sectors, private sectors and the federal government.

The federal task force will help to accentuate the public relations efforts that have been made by First Lady Michelle Obama over the past several months to raise awareness about the childhood obesity issue. The memorandum specifically placed an emphasis on the involvement of families and communities, which will be encouraged to utilize effective strategies to solve the problem of childhood obesity in our nation.

President Obama spoke about the issue of childhood obesity earlier this morning, saying, “Childhood obesity is one of the most urgent health issues that we face in this country. We think that this [memorandum] has enormous promise in improving the health of our children, in giving support to parents to make the kinds of healthy choices that oftentimes are very difficult.”

Statistics included in the memorandum that was signed by the President on Tuesday indicate that nearly one-third of our nation’s children are currently either overweight or classified as obese.
