President Will Smith?
Actor, film producer, and rapper Will Smith apparently wants to leave his successful entertainment career behind for the world of politics, and is “quite serious” about his aspirations of running for President.
The two-time Oscar nominee first became a household name in the 90's as the title character of NBC’s The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and later shot to international fame when he transitioned to the big screen, starring in Independence Day, Bad Boys, and Men in Black. After almost two decades of steady commercial success and positive critical reception, Smith was declared “the most powerful actor on the planet” by Newsweek in 2007.
He seems to have it all. But Smith wants more– to be precise, he wants to be President. Now that he has all but conquered the entertainment industry, Smith hopes to pursue a political career, and ultimately aims to win over the White House.
“Will is thinking about going into politics,” wife Jada Pinkett Smith confirmed. “He once said he could imagine becoming a US President. He wasn’t joking. He was quite serious about it. Will and I want to leave traces on this planet– and with that I mean more important traces than just films.”
Current President Barack Obama has even spoken out about Smith, and stated that if a film were to be made about his life, he would cast the Hitch star as himself “because he has the ears.” The two have already discussed the possibility of creating a film based on the 2008 election, a project that could be an attractive offer if Smith’s political aspirations fail to launch into a full-fledged career. After all, sticking to what he does best and playing a President in a movie is probably the next best thing to actually being one.
