Prince Caspian Wins Out at the Box Office This Weekend

Iron Man slipped out of the top spot as "Prince Caspian" came in at No. 1 this weekend.

This weekend at the box office, Iron Man wasn't able to keep himself in the top spot over the opening of the most recent Narnia film, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. The film, which opened this weekend under much hype, was able to beat out the comic film, taking in $56.6 million at the box office, according to the Associated Press.

The sequel to last year's The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, however, was unable to take in more than its predecessor, which had an opening weekend, last year, of $65.6 million. Unfortunately, the film was also not able to take over the foreign market overseas. The film only grossed an estimated $20.7 million for the 12 countries in which it opened, said Reuters. The super hero comic strip, Iron Man, is still number one overseas, making an estimated $25.6 million from the 62 countries in which it has opened, bringing its total to $206 million.

Walt Disney Co. is expecting the fantasy to get even better over this coming Memorial weekend, where the first film was able to make $745 million worldwide. "This is a film that we think is going to play all summer long and it's got nothing but school holidays in front of it," reported the AP, quoting Mark Zoradi, president of the Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Group.

The third film is already in production, The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader, which has its release date set for the summer of 2010.

Iron Man came in at second in this weekend's domestic box office, making $31.2 million. What Happens in Vegas moved up to third, making $13.9, while Speed Racer slipped to fourth, making only $7.6 million. Finally, Baby Mama kept its fifth place title, making $4.6 million this weekend, reported the Associated Press.
