Prince To Sue Major Websites Over Music Use
Prince plans to sue YouTube, Ebay, and other major websites for unauthorized use of his internet. Prince seeks to "reclaim his art on the Internet" by refusing to let fans post or sell any content related to him. While it is difficult for such large websites to monitor the content being posted on their pages, a statement released by Prince said: "[Websites] are clearly able [to] filter porn and pedophile material but appear to choose not to filter out the unauthorized music and film content which is core to their business success."
YouTube, one of the websites mentioned in the statement, has said that they are working to better assist music labels and artists to manage what is being posted on the site. Web Sheriff, a British company, was hired to begin removing material off the Internet. They claim they have removed approximately 2,000 videos relating Prince off of YouTube and over 300 items from Ebay. In an age where the internet has helped infinite numbers of artists to be heard and become popular, a crackdown on website material may hurt the independent music industry, as well as mainstream artists.
