The Producers Ends Broadway Run

Mel Brooks's "The Producers" ended its New York City Broadway run after 2,502 shows.

The Producers final performance at St. James Theatre on Broadway in New York City was packed, and received wild applause throughout the show. As the cast bowed for the last time, creator Mel Brooks, Director/Choreographer Susan Stroman, and writer Thomas Meehan came on stage one last time.

Brooks joked from the stage, "It has been the best experience for me since World War II. And (with) just about as much noise."

During its time on Broadway, the show grossed more than $1 billion in ticket sales, which included a worldwide tour and an engagement in London. It originally starred heavy hitters Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick and won a record-breaking 12 Tony Awards.

Like Brooks's next Broadway play, Young Frakenstein, expected to also be hosted in the St. James Theatre, The Producers was based on one of Brooks's earlier films.
