Prom Scandal Student Returns to School

Constance McMillen takes a stand

In Jackson, Mississippi, Constance McMillen was denied the right to bring a same-sex date to her high school's prom.

McMillen's school district voted to cancel senior prom to prevent her from bringing a same-sex date to the formal event.

McMillen, 18, was urged by her family to stay strong and keep her chin up. Instead of backing away from school, she returned, despite the mean looks and comments her classmates gave her.

On Wednesday the district announced that they were canceling the senior prom on April 2.

The American Civil Liberties Union said that banning same-sex prom dates was a violation to student rights. The school district proceeded to make their decision to cancel the anticipated event.

According to Chron National News:

"A school board statement said it wouldn't host the event in Fulton, 'due to the distractions to the educational process caused by recent events' but never mentioned McMillen or her girlfriend, who also is a student at the school."

McMillen's high school was also against her wearing a tuxedo to the prom.
