Prop 8 upheld in California

The Supreme Court upheld Proposition 8 in a ruling on Tuesday while honoring the marriages of same-sex couples married during the six months prior to the November vote.

In the mixed-message ruling, the California state Supreme Court decided on Tuesday to uphold Proposition 8, as well as honor the marriages of same-sex couples wed during the six months prior to the November vote. The Los Angeles Times cites that because of this there are now 18,000 legally married couples planning to take the message of equality nationwide. The San Francisco Chronicle notes that Prop 8 supporters plan to use door-to-door campaigning as well as neighborhood organizations to futher the conversation with dissenters. They have also planned a march from Selma, Alabama - not coincidentally the birthplace of civil rights, to Fresno, California in an attempt to spread awareness and support of same-sex marriage into middle America. Conversely, a million-dollar crusade is being launched by Yes on 8 chairman Ron Prentice to rally patronage for the exclusivity of marriage between a man and a woman. However, despite controversy, the small island of now legally married same-sex couples remains determined to reverse the ruling and legitimize the union of all couples throughout California.
